Propolis Tincture
What is Propolis?
Did you know that honey is not the only thing that bees can produce and that propolis is a piece among the fans of its achievements which is produced from the sap of evergreen trees or otherwise trees with needles? The combination of the sap of these trees with their secretions and together with beeswax, create a sticky, greenish-brown product that finds application as a coating for the construction of their hives and gets the name propolis.
For thousands of years, ancient civilizations adopted the use of propolis by applying it in several medical practices knowing its amazing properties being able to provide treatment to a variety of diseases. The Assyrians placed it on wounds and tumors to fight infections and speed up the healing process. The Egyptians used it in the embalming of mummies.
The composition of propolis varies from place to place but also between the different kinds of trees and flowers to which the bees have access, with the result that Greek propolis differs from Brazilian propolis and for this reason no specific conclusions can be drawn regarding its properties and find universal application. Every place has something unique to offer. The diversity of the Greek climate in its different places and the range of flowers and trees give Greek propolis numerous properties, making it superior in quality.
More generally, more than 300 chemical components have been identified, which are found in propolis. Polyphenols and antioxidants enhance its action as they fight diseases and damage to the body and the body as a system. Generally speaking, the polyphenols found in propolis are also called flavonoids and are produced in plants as a kind of protection. Commonly, they are found in foods called antioxidants. Flavonoids are also found in fruits, green tea, vegetables and red wine. Additionally, vitamins, essential oils, trace elements, sugar, pollen and other substances are detected.

Propolis has a special compound called pinocembrin which belongs to the flavonoids and gives it properties against fungi. Additionally, propolis’s alcohol solution, commonly tincture, produces greater results on oral surgery wounds than steroid creams as they can reduce harmful cells associated with inflammation and slow the healing process.
